Bayfield County Ad-Hoc Business Park Planning Committee
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 – 1:30 p.m.
Bayfield County Business Park, Ashland, WI

1) Call to Order;
The Bayfield County Ad Hoc Business Park Planning County was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by
Chairman Scottie Sandstrom. A roll call was taken by Chairman Scottie Sandstrom, as follows, present:
Scottie Sandstrom, County Administrator-Mark Abeles-Allison, Leo Carlson from Norvado, Preston
Mikula from Ashland Ford Chrysler. Absent were: Bayfield County Board Member-Marty Milanowski
and Mike BeBeau. Total: 4 present, 2 absent. A quorum was present to conduct business.
Also present were: Brian Hanson from APEX, Larry Roecker from Bayfield Electric, and Clerk III–
Allison Radke.
2) Public Comment; No public comment was received.
3) Minutes from the September 5th, 2018 meeting;
A motion was made by Abeles-Allison, Sandstrom to adopt the minutes of the September 5th, 2018
Bayfield County Ad-Hoc Business Park meeting. One correction for agenda item 4. APEX also
represents Bayfield County. The motion carried.
4) Brian Hanson: Business Park Regional Marketing ideas, via APEX and Corenet Global
membership;
Hanson said APEX has had a relationship with Bayfield County for 6-7 years now. See handout for
more information. He described numerous memberships and conference opportunities, mainly
commenting that most organizations would be very expensive. Hanson commented on industry-specific
events, as seen on the second page of the handout. It was mentioned that the new President for
Northland College has a strong business background. Hanson described a few more cost effective ideas.
Trips are a possible to Madison and Chicago, among other locations. Another idea was a QR code at
points of interest. Discussion was had regarding various organization membership. Hanson offered to
mention the Bayfield County Business Park at the conferences.
5) Marketing Update: WhistleStop race marketing and banner;
Chairman Sandstrom put flyers in the WhistleStop race bags. He also printed new flyers with updated
contact information. There was further discussion about having a banner at Ashland Ford Chrysler. The
banner was priced at approximately 200 dollars. The goal is to design the banner this fall and have it
ready. Members shared ideas regarding the sign and materials.
6) Update on new business opportunities;
Chairman Sandstrom reported on recent contact with potential businesses.
7) Business Park Road update/ additional update on TEA funding; Bayfield County Administrator,
Mark Abeles-Allison;
The road is nearly complete. The United States Department of Agriculture will reimburse approximately
$100,000. The road has cost approximately $400,000.
TEA funding is a 50/50 grant from the Department of Transportation. There are multiple restrictions. A
challenge is that the grant has to create new jobs.
8) Member updates; None received.
9) Adjournment;
There was discussion regarding the dimensions and logistics of the sign.
The next meeting for the Committee will be: Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the
Bayfield County Business Park.
There being no further business to come before the Bayfield County Ad-Hoc Business Park Planning
Committee, the meeting was adjourned at 2:53 p.m.
