Bayfield County Industrial Development Agency Meeting

Emergency Operations Center, Bayfield County Annex Building, Washburn, WI
Members Present: Brett Rondeau, Shawn Miller, Scottie Sandstrom
Members Absent: Jack Carlson, Rick Geisen, Dan Anderson
Others Present: Mark Abeles-Allison, Bayfield County Administrator; Bob Peltonen-World
Class Manufacturing, Elyssa Hanson-APEX (via telephone)
Meeting called to order at 5:00pm by Shawn Miller.
Motion Rondeau, Sandstrom to approve minutes of the January 10, 2013 Industrial Development
Agency meeting. Motion Carried.
World Class Manufacturing Update: Abeles-Allison reported on the status of World Class, which
is up to date on finances. Peltonen reported that at one time they were up to 29 employees.
Currently down to 2 shifts. Bayfield facility is still not making a lot of money. Midwest relies
heavily on Caterpillar. Milwaukee Forge has provided quite a bit of work. Signed a 3-year
contract with a large customer. Estimating they will be hiring up to 50 people in the near future
between the two facilities. Future looks good. Work will be related to the gas/oil industry.
Cameron pump maker will be a large customer. Anticipate doubling the business in 2014, with a
3-year contract.
Sandstrom working toward recruiting a “product line” to be manufactured here.
3rd quarter was bad, but 4th quarter is picking up really well.
Abeles-Allison reported that Impact 7 has new leadership and would like to meet with World
Class at some point. Peltonen reported that a sign on US 13 would be very beneficial for the
industrial business park.
Elyssa Hanson with Apex reported that the marketing business is busier than ever, particularly
with aviation and oil/gas related operations.
Peltonen exited the meeting at this time.
Bayfield County Business Park: In 2012, 40 acres were converted to commercial. Parcel was
sold to Chuck Porter with Superior Saunas. Sandstrom thanked Elyssa for information on
signage and marketing suggestions for the business park. Review of proposed sign for the
business park.
WEDC will provide some guidance on marketing the business park. Hanson also provided some
thoughts on marketing the site.
Sandstrom reported on efforts to get gas/electric service to the business park site. 3-phase power
is the primary concern if additional manufacturing will be located at the business park.
Business Incubator location in Iron River, D-3 has relocated. 15,000 sq feet are available in the
incubator.
Hanson disconnected from the meeting at this time.
Motion Rondeau, Sandstrom to enter closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85 (1)(e) for the
purpose of discussion and possible action regarding executive session minutes of January 10,
2013. Motion Carried.
Motion Rondeau, Sandstrom to approve closed session minutes of the January 10, 2013
Industrial Development Agency meeting. Motion Carried.
Motion Sandstrom, Rondeau to return to open session. Motion Carried
Meeting adjourned.
