Minutes of the
Bayfield County Executive Committee Meeting
Tuesday, January 24, 2006 5:00pm
Bayfield County Board Room
Members present: Verne Gilles, Harold Maki, Neil Paulson, Kenneth Jardine, Brett Rondeau,
John Blahnik
Others Present: Dee Kittleson, Mark Abeles-Allison, Kris Kavajecz., Kay Cederberg, Judge
John Anderson, various representatives from architectural design firms.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Rondeau at 5:00pm.
Motion by Blahnik , second by Gilles to approve the minutes of the January 17, 2006 Executive
Committee meeting. Motion carried.
Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Selection of Courtroom Renovation
Engineering/Design Firm and Courtroom Security System. The committee will interview
three architectural/design firms: Abeles-Allison explained that three architectural firms will
make presentations this evening in hopes of becoming the firm selected to provide
design/engineering services for the courtroom renovation project. The committee questioned
what guidelines the firms were given for their presentations. The Request for Proposals was the
guidance given. Kay Cederberg provided a brief overview of the most recent upgrade to the
court related operations of the courthouse.
Randy Lindemann and Clifford Buikema with KKE provided an overview of their firm and their
proposal for this project. KKE is a 200 person firm, based in Minneapolis, with a dedicated 10-
person Court Division. They have completed approximately 16 county projects in MN and WI.
Mr Lindemann spoke briefly on the courtroom security issues for persons entering the
courtroom. Several examples of technology capabilities built into some of their previous projects
were shared.
Phil Twohig and Chris Schultz with PTD, Inc and Lang Associates made a presentation. Mr
Twohig reviewed PTDs understanding of the needs identified. Several possible scenarios
utilizing the current courtroom structure were reviewed.
Tim Maertz, William Kurtz and James Sajdak represented OMNNI Associates and
Chequamegon Bay Engineering. Approximately 80 employees, mainly based in Appleton, with
an office in Ashland.. 2 FT and one PT person would be dedicated to this project.
The committee discussed the cost proposals presented by the various firms.
Motion by Blahnik, second by Paulson to hire KKE for Phase I of the project. Motion Carried.
Motion by Paulson, second by Maki to adjourn. Motion Carried.
Meeting adjourned at 7:10 pm.
