Present: Verne Gilles

Linda Stobbe
Jeanne Stoltenburg

Dee Kittleson
1) After a short tour of the Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library, Gilles called the meeting to
order at 1:10.
2) The previous meeting's minutes from May were approved.
3) Library updates:
▪ Forest Lodge Library is working on automation and getting items
barcoded as well as being busy with the summer people. The formation
of a Joint Library Committee between the towns of Namakogen and
Cable is in the works.
▪ The Washburn Public Library is busy with its summer reading program.
Hanson also reported that the Library is getting new front doors put on
the building this fall.
▪ Iron River had the Reed Puppet Show for their summer reading program.
The Library Board is sponsoring a “thank you” for the volunteers at the
Library.
▪ Gehrke reported that the Drummond Library summer reading program is
attracting lots of children.
4) Library Brochure:
▪ Hanson reported that it is still in the works. Graphics have been passed
along to Gehrke.
5) Bayfield County Libraries booth at Fair:
▪ An un-personed booth will be coordinated by the Iron River library.
Bookmarks and other library information to be placed so fairgoers can
take what they want. Materials need to be sent to Iron River via the
delivery service no later than August 1 (so it is there by Aug 6th). Bayfield
and Red Cliff libraries will be notified by Hanson.
6) 2004 Budget:
▪ Gehrke passed out updated plans and current numbers and statistics and
provided an explanation of the budget. 100% reimbursement would
come to $143,874 with increases due to the addition of the library in Iron
River and increased circulation at Bayfield. Gehrke discussed different
factors that affect the final amount such as cost-per-circulation. Frostman
said that if in the past we’ve asked and received 100% funding we should
ask for that in this budget. Frostman made a motion that we submit the
Bayfield County Library Plan and ask for the 100% funding of $143,877.
Motion carried. Gilles suggested that we look at other county plans to get
ideas. Krause requested copies of the county plans in NWLS service area
from Stoltenburg which she said she would provide.
7) NWLS Budget Request
▪ Stoltenburg passed out the Northern Waters Library Service budget
request for Bayfield County of $35, 006 which is a 2% increase over 2003’s
request. She went on to point out that 40% of Mail-A-Book use is from
Bayfield County. Discussion of MAB program and options to provide
service in other ways followed. Frostman made a motion to appropriate
$35,006 for NWLS. Carried. Stoltenburg asked if it would be helpful to
have a NWLS employee attend the Bayfield County Library Planning
Commission meetings and it was thought that it would be helpful.
8) Krause asked about interest in running a weekly column in the County Journal. She will
coordinate this if librarians will submit articles to her.
9) The next meeting is scheduled for September 23, 2003 at 1:00 at the Washburn Public Library.
Meeting adjourned.
