The monthly meeting of the Bayfield County Library Committee was called to
order by Chair Beth Meyers, at 4:00 pm. Those in attendance were: Richard
Compton, Bill Blair, Linda Parker, Courtney Dietsche, Darrell Pendergrass, Mike
from No Waters, Mary Lintula, Beth Meyers, Mark Abeles-Allison, and Bev Gaber.
A quorum was present to conduct business.
1. Motion Regarding Minutes of December 2, 2013 Library Committee
Meeting. A motion was made by Sloan/Gaber to adopt the minutes of the
December 2, 2013 Library Committee meeting. The motion carried.
3. Library Members Appointees. The Committee reviewed the list
appointees for the library and the reorganization from 2013. Dietsche reported
that Jim Pedersen has moved out of Iron River and they would be appointing a
replacement for him; Linda Hultman may be appointed. Dietsche will contact Dawn
once the information is available.
4. Bayfield County Plan of Library Service for 2014, Update,
Discussion and Possible Action. The 2014 Plan of Service was reviewed. This was
updated in the fall of 2013; several comments were made:
a) Sloan asked how new members of the community come in contact with
libraries?
b) Pendergrass noted that local websites and the Welcome Wagon were
used in Washburn. It was noted to possibly have Hope McLeod write
an article.
c) It was suggested that Bayfield County have links to County libraries
on their website.
d) Lendved made several comments about old language in the Plan;
references to video tapes, etc.; she will forward changes to be made.
5. Discussion and 2015 Budget Library Plan Submitted by Bayfield
County Libraries. Pendergrass presented the 2015 Library Plan submitted by
Bayfield County Librarians. Charts 1-4 were reviewed showing proposed
reimbursement of $220,401 up $32,811 from 2013; overall County circulations are
down about 1600 (77,931 in 2012, versus 76,280 in 2013); cost per circulations in
2013 ranged between $1.66 and $5.49 and the proposed 2015 reimbursement plan.

6. 2014 Building Strong Library Program Update; Washburn and
Cable/Namakagon Projects. Lendved and Pendergrass updated the group on their
libraries BSL projects for 2013. Cable/Namakagon will be completing a solar
cooling/heating project. They now have 4 panels up courtesy of the Cool Planet
Skiers Fund on the adjacent museum structure and will be adding a total of eight
more panels as part of their BSL project at a county cost of $4500. The twelve
panels will mean 100% of the library cooling and a portion of the heating is taken
care of.
Pendergrass says the BSL window replacement project will be used for the historic
basement windows on the library. Roof work began today with windows to follow.
7. Discussion and Possible Action; building Strong Library Program,
2015 Including Updated Timelines. The Committee reviewed the proposed plan
for the BSL program in 2015. If library maintenance funding remains at $187,500
approximately $32,000 will be available for the BSL program. The Committee
reviewed the individual sections of the program guidelines and was in general
agreement with them. Sloan/Gaber made a motion to remove Section 2C that
limits the number of projects to two. The motion carried. Applications for
BSL in 2014 for 2015 are due Friday, August 1. Applications will be reviewed,
tabulated and forwarded to the Committee for discussion and decisions at the
August 14 meeting.
8. Bayfield County Library Committee Recommendation for 2015
Budget. The Committee discussed the recommendation for the 2015 budget. A
motion was made by Kittleson/Gaber to keep the level the same in 2015,
($187,590), with the remainder going towards capital projects. The motion
carried.
9. Individual Library Updates. Individual library updates were as
follows:
a) Cable- Annual fund raisers, antiques and wine are underway
accompanied by a video library report. The library sponsored a
“make space” library craft today. The new book “The Public
Library” by Robert Lawson featured the Cable Library as one of
three in Wisconsin.
b) Iron River: Discussions about expansion continue. The summer
reading program begins June 7 with a carnival put on by the
auxiliary in July.
c) Washburn: A merger of library districts would increase
searches from the current 30 libraries in the Northern Waters

District to over 90. This summer’s reading program will feature
a gumball machine with sugar free gum and marbles redeemable
for prizes.
d) Bayfield: The new Library Director, Blair Nelson, will begin
June 1st. Theresa handed out the open house flyer to be held
from 1-5 pm on Wed., June 11th. The library sponsored a “tech
night” recently.
e) Northern Waters Representative discussed access to books,
the Community Library in Cornucopia at the Community Center.
f) Miscellaneous discussion regarding e-cigarettes (Iron River has
a new policy available from Courtney).
g) Kittleson expressed that she was happy to be back on the
board.
There being no further business to come before the Bayfield County Library
Committee, Chair Meyers adjourned the meeting at 5:17 p.m. Next meeting will be
held on August 14 at 3p.m.
