HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Committee - Minutes - 1/25/20181
1. Call to Order. The meeting of the Bayfield County Library Committee was called to
order by Mary Lintula at 6:00 pm. Those in attendance were: Mary Lintula, Drummond Public Library,
James Crandall, County Board Supervisor; Rachel Coughtry, County Board Supervisor; Alyssa Cleland,
Northern Waters Representative; Linda Parker, Cable Forest Lodge Library; Linda Hultman, Iron River
and Jacqueline Pooler, Evelyn Goldberg Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library, Iron River; Kristine Lendved,
Forest Lodge Librarian; Darrell Pendergrass and Beverly Gaber, Washburn Public Library; Richard
Compton, Bayfield Library; and Mark Abeles-Allison, Bayfield County Administrator. Absent: Bill Sloan,
and Suzanne Widmar. A quorum was present to conduct business. Introductions were made since
Jacqueline Pooler was new to the group.
2. Public Comment. None.
Chair Lintula changed the agenda around to accommodate Supervisor Coughtry’s having to leave
early. The Committee agreed.
3. Discussion and Possible Action on 2018 BSL Project Submittals and Recommendation
to the Bayfield County Board of Supervisors. Abeles-Allison reviewed with the Committee via
powerpoint, the 3-year plan which will end in begin now in 2018 and expire in 2022.
Discussion took place on the difference between the Cable and Drummond circulation. As some
pointed out, it could be due to the fact that Drummond has the school with a library. Cable has a
library, store, post office, many stops one can make at one time.
Discussion took place on the Red Cliff Library. Alyssa Cleland from Northern Waters informed
everyone that they are not an “official” library. There are standards that must be kept and they have
not been. They are in the process of trying to re-establish those standards. Presently money is a
problem for them as well. UW-Superior is also working with them in helping them get the proper
documentation prepared. They closed their doors in 2010, so it has been a few years. This topic will
be put on the next agenda for an update.
Alyssa also stated that under Library Services, Ancestry will be ending on April 1, 2018, so it
could be removed from this document and updated. She also stated that Overdrive will now be
supplemented. Alyssa also stated that Northern Waters no longer has a monthly newsletter.
Jacqueline Pooler, new Librarian for Iron River, passed out a document which contained updated
information for the last paragraph of Iron River’s section of the BSL document.
Discussion took place on Goal 2, #5 – “Annual Report” to Bayfield County Board of Supervisors
and Bayfield County Department Heads. After discussing it was thought that Northern Waters as well
as the Department of Public Instruction should receive a copy of the Annual Report.
A motion was made by Compton/Hultman to adopt the Bayfield County Building Strong
Libraries Plan for 2018-21. The motion carried.

6. Bayfield County Library Updates.
Bayfield: Compton reported on behalf of Blair who could not be at the meeting. The library has
been working on receiving pledges from the community for the renovation of the pillars of the structure
as they are deteriorating badly and need to be replaced. They have held several fund raisers for the
cause and have done very well.
Washburn: Pendergrass reported that as of late, he has been going to The Oaks to read to the
residents and he encouraged others to do the same. They have enjoyed his company and look forward
to seeing him and are very appreciative. The library has a book bin where they sold books for a quarter
noting that they didn’t sell very many. So, they put “free” on the books and people took them.
Iron River: Pooler reported that they moved into their new building on January 15th, bookshelves
are filled and boxes are empty. They are looking at programs and the types of patrons to better gauge
what to purchase in the future. They have purchased more shelves from the Superior Library. The
plan of the library is to have an open house in the future which everyone will be invited to attend.
Cable: Lendved reported that they held a fused glass holiday ornament making class around
Christmas time. They are still trying to figure out what to do with their property. They have
interviewed architectural firms and have a committee looking at the facilities now.
Drummond: Widmar was not able to attend this evening and Parker reported on her behalf. They
have more school groups coming and more checkouts as well. They art show they had scheduled was
postponed and will be rescheduled in the future. They presently have 8 Washburn artists we have
displayed their artwork at the library for everyone to view.
Northern Waters: Alyssa Cleland that she is new to Northern Waters, only having been here 3
months. She reported that they have finished and submitted all the annual reports. A few weeks ago,
when we had the snowstorms, there was a car accident a delivery truck that had many books for
deliveries. Presently, there are still orders missing and they are working on the situation.
Cleland stated that Flipster is also non-existing on their report and can be removed.

Cleland also reported on the Bad River Library, which presently has 6 days to become compliant
to keep its library status. Lac du Flambeau will be joining the Merlin program and is going through the
whole process.
7. Library Committee Chair. Lintula reminded the Committee that there will be a new
election for Committee Chair in May and the next meeting date was then set for May 17th at 4 p.m. in
the EOC.

adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
