Call to Order; The meeting of the Bayfield County Library Committee was called to order by Mary Lintula at 4:03 p.m. Those in attendance were: Mary Lintula, Tom Snilsberg, Jeremy Oswald, Linda Hultman, Jim Crandall, Dick Compton, Linda Parker and Bill Sloan via phone. Absent: Bev Gabor. Advisory Member: Darrell Pendergrass, Blair Nelson, Kristine Lendved, Sherry Machones, Jacqueline Pooler, Suzanne Widmar. Also present were: Mark Abeles-Allison-County Administrator, Allison Radke-Clerk III. 2. Elect Library Committee Chair: It was noted that Mary Lintula was elected at the last meeting. 3. Public Comment; No comment was received. 4. Approval of May 17, 2018 minutes; Motion by Linda Parker, Bill Sloan to approve minutes. Motion carried. 5. IMLS Presentation by Terri DeVoe, Associate Deputy Director, Grants to States, Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. DeVoe introduced herself via teleconference call. Explained what IMLS can and cannot fund. Wisconsin funds- access to technology, increased services to youth and unserved populations. DeVoe thought that Wisconsin funds might be a better resource for this area. Provided examples of projects, where they occur, how many they received, etc. NWLS Director Machones informed that Wisconsin is not providing any grants this year. DeVoe explained different grant opportunities, including project grants. Mentioned a new possible grant opportunity for smaller institutions. Also informed about the National Medal Program, five winners are selected a year. The award is $5000 dollars a year. DeVoe communicated that IMLS is accessible and there are resources. County Administrator asked clarifying questions on grants. Review BSL 2018 Project Status; A report was received from Washburn Public Librarian, Darrell Pendergrass, regarding the accessibility improvements efforts. It’s a cooperative effort between Bayfield County and the City of Washburn. The City of Bayfield shelving project is complete. The Cable Media Lab project is complete. 7. Discussion and Possible Action on 2019 BSL Project Submittals and Recommendation to Bayfield County Board; Mark Abeles-Allison reviewed the 2019 BSL Project Submittals. • Iron River explained their proposed project. It involves three iPads with educational games for youth. Total cost: $3,016, County: $2262, Town: $754. • Bayfield spoke about their shelving projects to help allow for more space and especially more space for youth. Total cost: $11,272, County: $8454, City: $2818. • The Forest Lodge Library proposal includes media lab / podcasting: Total cost: $2377, County: $1773, Town: $594. Motion by Crandall, Silbert to approve the three Building Strong Library requests for a total of $12,499 in county funding for 2019 and recommend onto the County Board. 8. Library Reports a. Northern Waters Update; Sherry from NWLS explained why there is no grant funding from the State of Wisconsin as a result of funding being redirected to the “Public Library System Redesign” project. Also, explained that there are two openings at present. b. Bayfield Public Library had a Library Rocks concert, with a potluck. They found a sponsor for a film festival. They are additionally thinking about doing memory cafes. c. Washburn Public Library had a summer reading program, including tie dying, classic movie nights. The building is in need for tuck-pointing with an estimated cost of $240,000. They want to fundraise with a goal end date of 2020 for the tuck-pointing. d. Forest Lodge Library had a film screening of “Cheeseheads.” They have hosted numerous other events throughout the summer. The major news is that they are going to be starting a building project! e. Iron River Library had a geology presentation by Northland College students. They end their summer reading program on Saturday and will have a musician present. They are hosting a fishing event also. 3 f. Drummond Public Library will have a pasta making event, presented by Jim Crandall. Mary Lintula spoke on Suzanne’s behalf in her absence. 9. Adjournment. Motion by Linda Parker, Mary Lintula to adjourn the meeting.
