Minutes of the:
Bayfield County Library Committee Meeting
January 17th, 2019 4:00 p.m.
Annex EOC Meeting Room, Bayfield County Courthouse, Washburn, WI
1. Call to Order;
The meeting of the Bayfield County Library Committee was called to order by Chair Mary
Lintula at 4:08 p.m. Those in attendance were: Suzanne Widmar, Jim Crandall, Jacqueline
Pooler, Linda Hultman, Mary Lintula, Jeremy Oswald, Kristine Lendved, Connie Cogger,
Darrell Pendergrass. A quorum was present to conduct business.
Those absent were: Tom Snilsberg, Dick Compton, Beverly Gaber, Linda Parker.
Also present were: Mark Abeles-Allison- Bayfield County Administrator, Allison Radke- Clerk
III, Anne-Marie Itzin- Northern Waters Library Service.
2. New Board Member Introduction, Connie Cogger, Northern Waters Library Service
Representative;
New Library Committee Board Member, Connie Cogger, introduced herself. She has been
involved with the Washburn Public Library and Northern Waters Library Service for multiple
years.
3. Public Comment; No public comment was received.
4. Motion regarding the Minutes of the August 16th, 2018 Bayfield County Library
Committee Meeting;
Motion by Crandall, Oswald to approve the August 16th, 2018 Bayfield County Library
Committee Minutes. No edits or corrections were made. Motion carried.

Top priorities were discussed and reviewed. Edits were discussed. The majority of objectives
were reported as being currently pursued by the Bayfield County Libraries.
1. “Offer 100% target funding for Bayfield County Libraries with through a combination of
direct funding and access to grant opportunities, like BSL.”
2. “New technology is an opportunity to keep libraries relevant.” Change wording.
3. Internal Strengths and Weaknesses:
Omit 1. County Library meets regularly.
#4. Change the language of 100% to include the qualifying language.
External Opportunities:
4. Act 420 is viewed more as a threat than an opportunity.
Add: The libraries provide an excellent place to go for youth and other community members.
External Threats:
Add: Structural Damages and the costs to repair.
Goal 2: Objective 1: A discussion was held regarding ways to use technology to
communicate to the public and to elected officials in Bayfield County.
Motion by Oswald, Hultman to approve the above language and content changes. Motion
carried.
6. 2018 Building Strong Library (BSL) project review;
Washburn Public Librarian, Darrel Pendergrass, gave an update on Washburn’s Building Strong
Library (BSL) project. Washburn Public Library has added automatic doors and will add an
unloading ramp.
Motion by Oswald, Hultman to re-formulate the Washburn Public Library improvement
funds. Motion carried.
There was a report from Forest Lodge Library, a joint library for Cable and Namakagon,
regarding their BSL project. The laptops have been beneficial and they are looking forward to
the podcast equipment.
Iron River Library gave an update regarding their project which involves purchasing iPads and
kiosks.
7. Discussion and Possible Action regarding Washburn Library BSL project modification;
A motion was previously made in item #6 regarding the Washburn Library BSL project
modification.
8. Discussion and Possible Action regarding 2020 BSL Priorities;
Motion by Hultman, Crandall to approve this document with updated dates for the 2020 BSL
Priorities. Motion carried.
9. National Medal Program through IMLS;

County Administrator Abeles-Allison provided information regarding the National Medal
Program through IMLS. All Bayfield County libraries are encouraged to apply. The Committee
mentioned Blair Nelson, from the Bayfield Carnegie Library, as a possible applicant.
10. Library Reports:
a. Red Cliff: No update was received. No representative was present.
b. Northern Waters Update: The annual report was discussed.
c. Bayfield County Libraries:
1. Drummond Public Library: Elementary school students are visiting the Library every
week. There is a photography exhibit by County Board Supervisor Oswald on display.
A general discussion regarding updated Bayfield County Library websites was held.
GALE COURSES are a free option through the Northern Waters Library Service. The
courses are about a variety of topics.
2. Washburn Public Library: Librarian Pendergrass provided words of remembrance after
Library Committee Member Bill Sloan’s passing. Sloan was described as a timeless
advocate for libraries. Pendergrass also reported on the new reading project at the
Bayfield County Jail. It is a pilot program that is also happening in a few other locations
in Wisconsin. Additionally, Pendergrass provides reading services to Northern Lights and
The Oaks
3. Forest Lodge Library: The Library has a new website. There is construction at the
Forest Lodge Library which has impacted Library hours.
4. Iron River Library: The Library also reported a new website. They are showing movies
and have activities in the afternoon. Additionally, there will be a therapy dog at the Iron
River Library weekly. It will be a reading opportunity for elementary students.
d. Library News: This item was covered in letters b and c.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:31 p.m.
