Overview of Future Plan for the Historic Civic Center by Mary Nowakowski, President, Historic
Civic Center Foundation
Linder introduced Mary Nowakowski, President of the Historic Civic Center Foundation. Mary
presented information about the historic civic center. The City of Washburn owned the building until
2010. The City Council had voted to demolish the building. Signatures were gathered to keep the
building. Mary and her husband bought it to save the building. The building is 11,000 square feet
and 100 years old. They applied for a $200,000 TIF funding to add handicap accessibility, building
repairs and maintenance. The 1943 addition was removed to put in a handicap ramp and the lot next
door was purchased from Olson’s Building Materials. The intent was to save the building and resell.
Formed a non-profit historic foundation and the building was donated to the foundation. In 2015
another $100,000 was invested in the building for repairs. Still looking at $175,000-$200,000 for
further repairs and maintenance on electrical work, parking area, handicap bathroom, sprinkler
system, painting, etc. Looking to have some type of long-term lease for renters. Washburn Chamber
of Commerce has indicated interest.
Nutrition Program Updates
A. Examine findings from committee member congregate meal site reviews. Linder briefly
reviewed information collected on three site reviews-Benoit, Iron River, and Washburn. One
area noted was no signage is present at these meal sites. Linder noted when further
information is received on the Barnes and Port Wing sites, it will be presented to committee
members. Overall, fairly, pleasant experiences at sites.
B. Review Status of Port Wing Meal Site. Linder noted that there has been ongoing interest to
change the meal site area from the South Shore School to the Bear Paw Restaurant. This
interest is being generated by the Port Wing seniors. Flyer was distributed on a meeting to be
held on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Port Wing Fire Hall to discuss the relocation of the Port
Wing Meal Site.
