HomeMy WebLinkAboutAging & Disability Advisory Committee - Minutes - 3/18/2019 1 BAYFIELD COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES AGING AND DISABILITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMITTEE Courthouse Conference Room B March 18, 2019 2:56 p.m. Committee Members Present: Karen Anderson, Alan Filipczak, Tom Gordon, Betty Schell Committee Members Excused: Lynette Benzschawel, Kathryn Grafsgaard, Suzanne Rooney Committee Member Absent: None Staff Present: Carrie Linder, Jane Cook, Ann Marie Mackin Call to Order and Introductions Gordon called the meeting to order at 2:56 p.m. Discussion and Possible Action-Review of the December 3, 2018 Meeting Minutes Motion by Schell to approve the December 3, 2018 Minutes, second by Anderson. Motion carried. Discussion and Possible Action-New Citizen Application-Sam Ray Linder presented application for Sam Ray, Benevolence Manger, Brick Ministries. Brief review of application. Motion by Gordon to refer Sam Ray citizen application to HS Board with recommendation to accept by ADAC, second by Anderson. Motion carried. Discussion and Possible Action-Review of the 2018 Aging Unit Self-Assessment Schell questioned the term beginning information on page 1 of 17. Linder will review information and update as required. Linder reviewed the aging plan goals and progress made during 2018. Discussion took place. Motion by Gordon to approve 2018 Aging Unit Self-Assessment, second by Schell. Motion carried. Presentation-Music and Memory-by Ann Marie Mackin, Aging and Disability Services Specialist Item moved down in meeting order to allow for action items approval due to committee member leaving early. Ann Marie Mackin, Aging and Disability Services Specialist provided a presentation on the Music and Memory Program being implemented by the ADRC of the North. This program is for people living with a wide range of cognitive and physical challenges. Mackin provided an informational sheet on the Music & Memory Program. ADRC Updates A. Facebook page – will be developed for the ADRC of the North and each county will have its own page to post and keep updated. Ann Marie Mackin is taking the lead on this initiative. B. Staffing – Heather List was contracted to be the ADRC Regional Coordinator. She is learning aspects of the position. The DCS position has been posted and final review of applicants has been done. Dates for interviews to be completed shortly. Alan Filipczak is leaving Red Cliff Elderly Program to take a position with MMC BHU. Anna Hanson has been promoted to Director of the Red Cliff Elderly Program, as she was serving as the Elderly Nutrition Head Cook. 2 C. Medicaid Estate Recovery for American Indians and Alaskan Natives Linder briefly reviewed information on Medicaid Estate Recovery and exempt status for Native Americans. ADRC staff will begin using brochure when working with tribal members. This has opened the door for additional dialogue and outreach on other services. Advocacy Updates A. Governor’s Budget Linder recently attended a meeting where the Governor’s budget was reviewed. New initiatives will primarily be funded by accepting additional Federal Medicaid funding. When the joint finance committee holds public hearings, it will be important to be present and make our voices be heard. B. Credit for Caring Act Provides a tax credit to Wisconsin caregivers who spend money to help a family member stay in their home. The bill creates an income tax credit that gives family caregivers an allowance of 50% of their annual caregiving costs up to $1,000 on their tax return against any money owed. This bill needs our support and you can contact your legislators in support of the Credit for Caring Act. Other (Informational Items) A. Living Well Newsletter March 2019 issue provided to members. Lots of interesting information provided in newsletter. Please review. B. Transportation Summit – April 16, 2019 at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. C. Caregiver Conference – April 18, 2019 at WITC Ashland from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Future Meeting Dates 2019 Next meeting: May 20, 2019 at the Barnes Meal Site.
