FORESTRY DEPARTMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
MAY 5, 2010
Members Present: Committee members present were Kenneth Jardine, Shawn Miller, Marco Bichanich
and John Bennett. Committee member excused was William Kacvinsky.
Staff in Attendance: Jason Bodine, Administrator, Steve Probst, Assistant Administrator and Barbara
Suminski, Office Manager.
Others in Attendance: Steve Coffin, DNR representative and five individuals representing logging
companies.
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by the Department Administrator Jason Bodine at 6:00 P.M.
Election of Officers: Bucky Jardine made a motion to appoint Shawn Miller as the Committee Chair. A call
was made for further nomination and there were none. On a roll call vote, Bucky Jardine, Marco Bichanich and
John Bennett approved the motion to appoint Shawn Miller as Committee Chairperson.
Shawn Miller, chairperson called for nominations for Vice-Chairperson and Bucky Jardine made a motion for
Marco Bichanich. A call was made for further nomination and there were none. On a roll call vote, Bucky
Jardine, John Bennett and Shawn Miller approved the motion to appoint Marco Bichanich as Vice- Chair for the
Committee.
Approve Minutes: On a motion by Marco Bichanich and seconded by Bucky Jardine the meeting minutes for
April 7, 2010 were approved and the motion carried.
Monthly Financial Report: On a motion by Marco Bichanich and seconded by John Bennett the monthly
financial report was approved.
Spring 2010 Timber Sale Offering Bid Opening: The Administrator began the process of opening bids for
the Spring 2010 Timber Sale. There were 18 timber sales on 1739 acres containing 28712 cord equivalents of
pulpwood and 857 M board feet of saw timber. All bids were sealed and delivered to the Forestry Department
offices by 6:00 P.M. on May 5, 2010. Altogether there were 82 bids on all of the sales and bids on all sales.
The total amount of all sales came to $1,110,865.85 in anticipated revenues.
Sand River Pit: C&W Trucking Inc., is requesting to haul roughly 13,000 yards of sand from the Sand River
Pit and to deposit 1,000 yards of clay into the pit. This is requested for the Red Cliff housing project which is
aimed at building twenty-four new homes and also the highway 13 construction. The administrator had visited
the site and was recommending approval at $.75 /yard. A motion was made by Bucky Jardine to approve the
purchase of sand and deposit clay as the administrator had proposed and at a rate of $.75/yard. The motion
was seconded by Marco Bichanich and the motion carried.
John Brilla Request: Mr. Brilla was coming to the Committee with the request that he receive five extentions
from sales that were purchased in CY2008 at no increase in stumpage costs. After lengthly discussion Bucky
Jardine made a motion not to approve John Brill’s request and Marco Bichanich seconded the motion and the
motion carried.
Presentation by Administrator: Bucky Jardine made a motion to postpone the presentation so that all
Committee members could be present. The motion was seconded by Marco Bichanich and the motion carried.

General Discussion Items:
Spring Planting: Spring planting went very well and staff were pleased with the containerized stock.
Survey Project: The survey project work being done by Mr. Mick has been completed.
Other: The administrator will be meeting with a profit organization that is requesting access to Bayfield County
Forest for equestrian purposes.
The Department has received another offer to purchase the Porter land.
The Committee had discussion regarding changing the time of Committee meetings for the summer months.
It was decided that they would remain on the same date, but would be at 8:30 A.M.
Steve Coffin, DNR Representative: Committee informed that the fire danger is still up and that staff are
moving around the State.
The next regular Forestry Department meeting will be on June 2, 2010 at 8:30 A.M. in the County Board Room.
On a motion by Marco Bichanich and seconded by Bucky Jardine the meeting adjourned at 7:32 P.M.
