HomeMy WebLinkAboutAquatic Invasive Species Committee - Minutes - 9/6/2012Bayfield County Aquatic Invasive Species Committee Chair: Nan Olson Vice Chair: John Kudlas Present: Nan Olson, John Kudlas, Mike Defoe and Tom Thornton (2:35pm); Bill Bussey (2:58pm) Staff: Jeremy Bates; Ben Dufford, Jennifer Schierman Minutes Thursday September 6th, 2012 1. Call to Order: Nan Olson 2:30 pm 5. Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area update/ Boat wash discussion – JB provided brief update about DM (NCWMA Coord) leaving. BD: NCWMA – new coord. Is being looked into applications are due next week. Hoping to have on board thru-out winter. Boat Wash: 393 boats washed, 60/hrs JB time coordinating, 2 interns hired (400 inspection hours combined) 475/hrs each. Nan was very impressed with the interns and the information they provided. Is the committee interested in having their own intern in Bayfield County or do same as 2012? Only handle while in our County, not all four (4). Consider purchasing our own washer, roughly $7,000, maintenance is minimal. Overall, washer was great (JB), many comments were going into inland lakes. Advantage would be it can be used in more places that aren’t in the Lake Superior Watershed (ie: Barnes). Looking for input at this point. John Kudlas is in favor of having our own unit. Look for estimate on total cost of owning washer. Nan Olson supports looking into own unit, possibly share funding with Red Cliff. Mike DeFoe agrees that our own unit would be important. Go ahead and look into options. 6. Discussion of AIS coordinator Leave of absence and task list – JB will be LOA from Sept.19 – Feb. 6, 2013. Will be available via email and will be home during the Holidays and will be available for possible meetings. Contact will be Ben or Jen in the LWCD for AIS issues. Possibility of attending a couple different meetings for Ben and/or Jen or committee members. Schedule meeting in December to look over Resolution while Jeremy is home. Other funding sources, for boat wash station, boat (14’- 16’ V-bottom) Lake Superior safe, etc. 2 Update on county AIS activities; a. AIS Coordinator’s update – on file b. CBCW update – charts on file c. George Lake update – JK rapid response project (Barnes approved) EWM treated. Very dramatic effect, no siting of milfoil sited since treatment. d. Eco-Ed project at Drummond – The hope for this project is to Lake Associations and communities get involved. Modules are created based on state standards. This is in conjunction with Science classes. So far this project has received great “word of mouth”. There is no fee associated, just want involvement. Town of Barnes website is where the information can be found. 3 Next AIS grant project application – Discussion that the next County AIS grant application should be completed for Feb 1st deadline. The current grant will carry us past the next cycle, though an application earlier will give us some leeway and room for adjustments if the first application is denied. A meeting in December will be held to put together the goals and objectives of the next grant. 4 Discussion/action: Curly Leaf Pondweed on Middle/Upper E.C. Lakes Support – The Town of Barnes AIS Committee will be applying for Rapid Response funds to determine control and the extent of CLP in Upper and Middle Eau Claire Lakes. There will be one application for each lake. The Bayfield County AIS Committee fully supports this effort and a letter of support will be provided by the AIS coordinator. 7 Public Comment; None 8 Next meeting; December 9 Adjournment; Motion to adjourn by Tom Thornton meeting adjourned at 4:15 pm
