HomeMy WebLinkAboutAquatic Invasive Species Committee - Minutes - 5/15/2014Bayfield County Aquatic Invasive Species Committee K:\AIS\Admin\Meetings\Committee\Minutes\2013 Present: Nan Olson, John Kudlas, Bill Bussey, Mike Defoe, and Bucky Jardine Staff: Jeremy Bates – AIS Project Coordinator Others: Pam Roberts NCWMA Coordinator Minutes Thursday May 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm. 1.Call to Order: Jeremy Bates called the meeting to order at 2:05 pm 2.Introductions and welcome to new committee member: Ken “Bucky” Jardine was welcomed to the committee. Bucky is serving as one of the two Bayfield County Board Supervisor representatives on the committee. Jeremy read the purpose for and of the Bayfield County AIS committee. 3.Nomination(s)/Approval(s) of AIS Committee Chair and Vice-Chair: -Motion by Bussey 2nd by Jardine to nominate Nan Olson Chair of Bayfield County AIS Committee, no other nominations were made. Motion by Bussey to elect Nan Olson Chair of BC AIS Committee- Motion Carried -Motion by Jardine 2nd by Bussey to nominate John Kudlas as Vice-chair of BC AIS Committee, no other nominations made. Motion by Bussey to elect John Kudlas BC AIS Committee Vice-Chair-Motion Carried 4.Public Comment; -NONE 5.Discussion/Possible action on AIS Committee structure and filling vacated positions -The AIS Committee structure is made of 2 county board members currently filled by Bucky Jardine and Bill Bussey, 1 Red Cliff Tribal representative filled by Mike Defoe, 1 town board member filled by Jim Krueger, 1 lake organization member filled by Nan Olson, and 1 lake related business member currently vacant. The other member is an open undefined position and is filled by John Kudlas. Discussion was made to fill the position with suggestions of Steve Probst (Iron River) or Tom Emerson (Barnes). Jeremy will follow up with these contacts and committee members will think of others possible candidates to recruit. 6.Discussion/possible action of Town of Barnes MOU for technical assistance -The Town of Barnes MOU for technical assistance outlines the relationship of the Town of Barnes AIS committee and the Bayfield AIS project in the Barnes area. This informal agreement will provide structure to AIS work in the area by defining key roles of each party. Motion by Bussey 2nd by Kudlas to approve the MOU. Motion Carried 7.Discussion/Possible action on boating equipment lease -No boating lease has been available as of yet. Jeremy has checked with two boat dealers and neither is willing to offer a lease. Boat rental or borrowing from lake residents is a feasible alternative. Might be difficult for Lake Superior surveys to find a boat safe for use. 8.Establish timeframe for remainder of 2014 meetings; -The next AIS committee meeting will be held June 25th 9.Partner Reports; -Pam Roberts NCWMA reported on Phragmites work that will be done this summer along with other outreach events. 10.County AIS Coordinator Report; -AIS Coordinator report reviewed and on file. Jeremy 11.Review of goals for 2014 -2014 goals are defined in the current AIS grant. Committee is aligned with these goals and little discussion took place. Goals and activities in the strategic plan need to be reviewed and updated. 12.Review summer work plan -Jeremy provided information on workshops, outreach events, dates of county fair, and lakes that will be monitored this summer. The committee agreed that it would be better to have a schedule or operating plan on paper to hand out for future work plans. 13.Northwest Wisconsin Lakes Conference -The NWLC will be held on June 20th at the Drummond School. All committee members are encouraged to attend. 14.Adjournment.
