Minutes of the
TOURISM & RECREATION COMMITTEE OF THE BAYFIELD COUNTY BOARD
Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 1:00 p.m.
County Board Room, Bayfield County Courthouse, Washburn, WI
Members Present: Brett Rondeau, Bucky Jardine, Rusty Williams, John Bennett
Members Absent: Patti Rantala
Others Present: Mary Motiff, Sue Trepanier
I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by Rondeau.
II. Minutes: Motion (Jardine, Williams) to accept minutes from the August 11, 2010 committee
meeting. Motion Carried.
III. Public Comment: No one was present for public comment.
IV. Discussion and Possible Action on Letter to Forest Service Regarding Opening up Trails to all
UTVs: Motiff spoke to Spring Rosales regarding UTV use in the National Forest. Rosales stated that if budget
constraints prevent them from going through the required process for opening all Forest Service trails to UTVs,
they may still be able to open up certain connector trails on an as-needed basis. Motiff presented a letter to
that effect. Motion (Williams, Bennett) to approve the letter as presented to the US Forest Service
regarding opening their trails to all UTVs. Motion Carried.
V. Discussion and Possible Action on 2011 Budget: Motiff reported that the advertising line item was cut
from $13,000 to $10,000. Promotion of the area is very important for tourism. Advertising revenue for the visitor
guide may make up the difference.
VI. Report from NORTAC: July meeting was canceled. Nothing to report
VII. Report from Director:
A. Parks: With the parks moving to forestry, there are a few loose ends to tie up. Motiff will meet with Bodine
regarding the transition.
B. Trails: Motiff received permission from the Full Board to start a dialog with landowners along the railroad
right-of-way and is currently trying to reach the Morkes regarding the right-of-way through their property.
This portion is a very important safety concern with over 2 miles of road route that could be eliminated.
Motiff will report to the Full Board regarding the status of the interaction on October 26. It was
recommended that we keep the sheriff’s department apprised of the situation as it progresses. The County
also needs to develop a use plan for the trail.
C. Marketing : Motiff is hoping to focus more on marketing and is working on the new website. She also has
recently hosted a German travel writer who will be writing articles highlighting the area.
VIII. Suggestions for Agenda Items for Next Committee Meeting: The Committee would like to move
forward with removing the trail blockages without having to go back to the Full Board for each parcel. Next
committee meeting tentatively set for 2:00 pm, October 28.
IX. Adjournment: There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:07 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by:
