HomeMy WebLinkAboutTourism & Fair Committee - Minutes - 9/28/2011K:\(T&R Committee)\2011\09 28\09 28 11 meeting min.doc Minutes of the TOURISM & RECREATION COMMITTEE OF THE BAYFIELD COUNTY BOARD Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 1:00 p.m. County Board Room, Bayfield County Courthouse, Washburn, WI Members Present: Brett Rondeau, Bucky Jardine, Rusty Williams, John Bennett Members Absent: Patti Rantala Others Present: Mary Motiff, Sue Trepanier I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by Rondeau. II. Minutes: Motion (Jardine, Williams) to accept minutes from the July 13, 2011 committee meeting. Motion Carried. III. Public Comment: No one was present for public comment. IV. Budget Review: The budget was reviewed by the committee. It was suggested that a year-to-date update be given at every committee meeting. V. Report from NORTAC: Nothing to report at this time. VI. Report from Director: A. Trails: * Land Records has some records that are not up to date concerning railroad parcels bought by Bayfield County in 1989. * The Committee would like to schedule another meeting in a couple of weeks to resolve issues on the former railroad grade. * Letters from the Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance to Port Wing businesses were discussed. * The Herbster bridge grant will have to be canceled. An easement is needed from a landowner in California who will not respond to letters. A re-route has been found. * Bayfield County has received the initial supplemental grooming payment from the DNR for $63,210. B. Marketing: * German travel writers will be in the area on Sept 29-30. Mary will be their guide. * The WI Department of Tourism is willing to do a presentation on The Power of Tourism for the Full County Board. Mary will try to schedule this for the November 15th meeting. * Advertising letters have gone out for the visitor guide and some responses are coming in. Letters for the ATV map will be going out soon. * The June, 2012 UW Alumni Conference planning is going well. * Year-to-date sales tax revenues are up $20,000 from 2010 contributed in part by visitor spending. * The website still needs updates when time permits. * Bayfield County’s facebook page has 682 “likes”. * Motiff is working on a new marketing plan based on this summer’s planning session with the chambers. * Area chambers were also discussed. C. Administrative Updates: * Trepanier’s evaluation was completed but the job description still needs to be reviewed. VII. Suggestions for Agenda Items for Next Committee Meeting: The committee would like to meet in the next couple of weeks to discuss trails and how to proceed. Discussion on who to invite followed. Meal policy was also discussed and found to be adequate. VIII.
