BAYFIELD COUNTY FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
June 30, 2014 – 6 p.m.
Bayfield County Fair Grounds, 7080 N Main Street, Iron River, Wisconsin
Minutes
1. Call To Order
Dee Kittleson, Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Committee Members present: Marco Bichanich, Jim Crandall Dee Kittleson, Shawn Miller and Rusty Williams.
Others present: Mark Abeles-Allison, Administrator; Bucky Jardine, County Board Supervisor; Cal Davies,
Groundskeeper; Bob Janigo, Track Supervisor, Verne Gilles; Kathi Marshall, North Woods Dressage; Sandy Rau,
Superintendent; Jeff Klobucher, 4H Market Sale; Kim Nieder, Superintendent & 4H Market Sale Leader; Roberta Opatik,
Superintendent; Missy Wiezorek, Swine Dept.; Mary Motiff, Director and Theresa Kummerow; Secretary.
2. Approval of Minutes from May 19, 2014 Meeting
Motion (Miller, Bichanich) To approve the May 19, 2014 minutes as presented. Motion Carried.
3. Buildings & Grounds Updates
a. Pavilion
Materials will arrive this week. Construction is to begin when materials arrive.
b. FEMA Building
The Administrator noted that a walk through for potential bidders happened earlier today. The bids will be due
July 10th. The bid opening will take place on July 17th.
c. Beef Arena
Motiff and Kummerow met with the Vernon family and others regarding the new beef arena. The gates/fencing
for the walk-way to and from the beef barn and show ring have been ordered.
The 4-H Market Sale is in the process of completing the photo platform for the market sale buyers outside of
the beef arena. They will also be moving some of gates.
d. Vendor Electric Upgrade
Electrical work is completed under the Grandstand and along poles- 9-50 amp outlets were installed.
e. Groomer Building Floor Drains
Estimates are still coming in.
f. Horse Arena Improvements
i. Stalls filled in new horse barn with help from the Prentice House.
ii. Security lights up on green horse barn
iii. Additional Electric to Horse Arena Food Booth –The wire has been buried.
iv. Dressage Rings – Discussion on improvements that need to be completed on the rings. Davies noted
that the Highway Department should be able to get the composted manure onto the rings and graded
by next week. Kathi Marshall, North Woods Dressage stated that her group is willing to donate up to
$1,000 to get the rings up the condition they would like them to be at.
4. Capital Improvements – 5 year Plan
A suggested five-year capital improvement plan was included in the Committee Members’ packets. The Beef Show Ring, a
dump trailer, swine pens, a portable stage and upgrades to the Exhibit Hall were discussed.
Motion (Miller, Bichanich) To move the Capital Improvement plan forward to the Executive Committee. Marco
Bichanich- yes, Dee Kittleson-yes, Shawn Miller-yes, Rusty Williams-yes, Jim Crandall –no.
Motion Carried.

5. 2014 Fair Planning and Updates
a. Volunteers
i. Online - The online volunteer sign up has gotten a few hits. Quite a few volunteers wait until the last
minute before committing. Kummerow clarified for the Superintendents that were present that those
who volunteer as Clerks for the animal departments also receive the same perks as those in the
Exhibit Hall.
ii. Flyer - A flyer explaining how people can get into the Fair for “Less, Free or Earn $” was distributed to
the Iron River Chamber and by the Aging & Disability section of the Bayfield County Human Services.
b. Committee Assignments/Schedules During the Fair
The Committee members will be around to lend a hand as needed.
c. Other
i. Advertising – The Fair banner and signs will be going up shortly. Advertising will start in a few weeks.
ii. Beer – The Budweiser representative was met with earlier today to discuss options and signage.
iii. BART – The BART bus will not be available for use on Saturday. Options will be looked at.
iv. Parking – The Committee would like the Boy Scouts to provide car parking supervision for Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. There is a current cap on the dollar amount to be paid to the Boy Scouts for
working on Friday and Saturday.
The consensus of the Fair Committee is to add up to an additional $100 if the Boy Scouts include Sunday into
their car parking schedule.
v. Portable bleachers – The portable bleachers have all been retrofitted with new hitches and axels.
vi. Track Supervisor – Bob Janigo is the Track Supervisor this year. Please check with him before you
make or authorize any changes in the track area, i.e. gates opened or locked, etc.
vii. Superintendents – Sandy Rau, Superintendent commented that with the Fair so early this year, she is
expecting the number of exhibits and exhibitors to be down.
6. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 pm.
