Fifth Street, Washburn, Wisconsin Minutes 1. Call To Order The Chair, Dee Kittleson, called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm. Committee members present: Dee Kittleson, Marco Bichanich and Jim Crandall, Shawn Miller and Rusty Williams Others present: Mark Abeles-Allison, Administrator; Bucky Jardine, County Board Supervisor; Mary Motiff, Director; Theresa Kummerow, Administrative Assistant; and Bob Janigo. 2. Approval of Minutes from October 9, 2014 Fair Committee Meeting Motion (Bichanich, Crandall,) To approve the October 9, 2014 minutes as presented. Motion Carried. 3. Public Comment Janigo asked for and was granted the authorization to comment during the discussion of 2015 Fair Planning. 4. 2014 YTD Budget Review 2014 YTD Budget information was included in the Committee Members’ packets. Motiff noted that the cost of the floor drains for the Groomer Building is included in the YTD Capital Improvements Expenses. There were no questions. 5. Discussion and Possible Action on 2015 Fair Planning Information regarding possible entertainment ideas and costs was included in the Committee Members’ packets. Discussions held on possible entertainment ideas for the 2015 Bayfield County Fair. Grandstand Shows – Friday night will be the Great Frontier Bull Riding Show. The contract has been signed. Sunday will be the Dirt Dash. The Saturday night grandstand show was discussed. A Truck and tractor pull was discussed, as well as a small Monster Truck Show and a Demolition Derby-as presented by Bob Janigo. The consensus of the Committee is to make a decision on the Saturday night Grandstand Show after checking on options at the Wisconsin Association of Fairs convention in January including a discussion with Dave Barbacovi, Spectrum Entertainment, LLC. Music in the Beer Garden was proposed at $4,000. At this time, no bands have been contacted as the dollar amount allotted for music needed to be approved first. The consensus of the Committee is to have the music costs for in the beer garden to not exceed a total of $4,000. Night Screamer should be contacted on their availability. Major grounds entertainment was discussed. Two options presented were Stunt Dogs and The Timberworks Lumberjack show. Discussion ensued on prices and the content of the shows. The consensus of the Committee is to have the Timberworks Lumberjack Legendary show to perform on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Family Entertainment options were discussed. Two options presented were Gary Kaler (George the Juggler & The Games Guy) or Jim Lenz the Science and Magic Guy. Discussion. The consensus of the Committee is to have Gary Kaler (George the Juggler & The Games Guy) to perform on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At this point in time, we are unable to find a petting zoo that is available, but will continue searching. The Raptor Experience and the Duluth Zoo may be available as alternatives. The suggestion of a Butterfly House was not met with support. Other grounds entertainment was discussed. Two new events in 2014; the Punt, Pass & Kick competition had between 22 & 26 participants and the Pedal Tractor Pull had approximately 40 participants. Heather Lynn Concessions has stated that they will sponsor the cost of the Pedal Tractor Pull in 2015. The Car & Tractor show was discussed but a decision will be made in January as to whether to go ahead with it again. The consensus of the Committee is to go ahead with the pony rides, the face painter, the Punt, Pass & Kick competition, the Pedal Tractor Pull, and the free entertainment options such as; the DNR Wall of Shame, Mediaeval/Renaissance Reenactment and the National Guard Climbing Wall. The idea of utilizing the vendor area for additional entertainment options, by moving machinery row closer to/along the track fence was discussed. Mark Abeles-Allison left the meeting. 6. Discussion & Possible Action on Non-Fair Events at the Fairgrounds A discussion on possible events that could be held at the Fair Grounds during non-fair days includes; Snowmobile races, motorcycle shows and a music festival. The venue is available for use but a promoter would need to hold the event. Motiff noted that she is following up with a motorcycle show promoter. Information regarding grounds fees and revenues from the past few years was included in the Committee Members’ packets. A discussion on fees was held. Motion (Crandall, Williams) To keep the Fair Grounds rental rates for 2015 the same as they were in 2014. Motion Carried. 7. District 2 Meeting Update Bayfield County Fair will be hosting the District 2 Fall meeting in October of 2015. We may hold the meeting at the Iron River at the Community Center or at the new FEMA Building, if it is completed by then. 8. Buildings & Grounds Update A. FEMA Building Update Enclosed in the Committee Members’ packets are the letters approving the decrease in size to the building. B. Beer Pavilion The electrical items for the beer pavilion are not to be purchased at this time. 9. Future Agenda Items and Next Meeting Date The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 5:30 pm at the Courthouse. 10. The Fair Committee may entertain a motion to move in and out of Executive Session pursuant to §19.85(1)(c) considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility. Motion (Miller, Bichanich) To go into Closed Session as per WI Statute above with the option to ask whomever they wish to come back into the meeting. Motion Carried.
