Minutes of the
TOURISM COMMITTEE OF THE BAYFIELD COUNTY BOARD
Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 10:00 a.m.
County Board Room, Bayfield County Courthouse, Washburn, WI
Members Present: Brett Rondeau, Bucky Jardine, John Bennett, Rusty Williams, Shawn Miller
Members Absent: None
Others Present: Mary Motiff, Sue Trepanier, Mark Abeles-Allison
I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Rondeau.
II. Election of Officers: Miller nominated Rondeau as Chairman for the Tourism Committee. Rondeau nominated
Jardine. Chairman Rondeau asked 3 times if there were any other nominations. With no other nominations Rondeau
called for a ballot vote. Abeles-Allison read the results: Rondeau – 2, Jardine – 3. Chairman Jardine took over the
meeting at this time. Miller nominated Rondeau as Vice-Chairman for the Tourism Committee. Chairman Jardine asked
3 times if there were any other nominations. Motion (Miller, Rondeau) to close the nominations and cast a
unanimous vote for Rondeau as Vice-Chairman. Motion Carried.
III. Motion Regarding February 5, 2014 Meeting Minutes: Motion (Rondeau, Jardine) to approve the minutes
from the February 5, 2014 committee meeting. Motion Carried.
IV. Budget Planning: Motiff went over a preliminary proposal for the 2015 budget:
Currently 4 meetings per year - Add meeting for budget planning
Personnel costs will be lower with Trepanier going ½ time in 2015
Printing costs will be higher but ad sales should offset cost. Also will be some shared printing costs – Co
highway map shared with Land Records & Forestry, and tear-off map shared with Ashland Co
ITBEC – New dues are $3,000 and they’re a more effective group. Used to be $6,000
Suggested additional $13,000 in advertising
$1,000 in capital equipment for video editing software
V. Report from Director:
Trepanier will be ½ time in July and has already started some training in at the County Clerk’s office
Visitor spending was up 1.56% in 2013
Sales tax revenue also up
The Discover WI motorcycle episodes will be aired 3 times over a 2-year period
Unpaid intern will start on May 27 and will be doing special projects
Motiff could attend a marketing seminar in Milwaukee on June 2-3 for free in exchange for giving them
feedback
Working with local chambers on various items – Geiger travel writer tours, IPC event, detour signage
Working with regional tourism entities – Chequamegon Bay Group, Ashland County, Scenic Byway
Council, ITBEC, Ride Lake Superior, NW WI Destination Marketing Organization
VI. Discussion & Possible Action on Tourism Department Goals & Objectives: Miller left the meeting at this time.
Motiff went over the Department’s Goals and Objectives and asked for any recommendations for changes. Some
objectives are met and some are ongoing. The committee suggested putting the goals and objectives on the agenda for
the next meeting. After some discussion, the next meeting date was set – 11:00 a.m. on June 10, 2014.
VII. Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 11:20 a.m.
