Minutes of the
BAYFIELD TOURISM & FAIR COMMITTEES
Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 4:00 PM
EOC Room, Bayfield County Annex Building, 6th Street, Washburn, WI
Members Present: Larry Fickbohm, James Crandall (Arrived 4:50 pm), Fred Strand, Jeremy Oswald (Departed 5:00 pm),
Tom Snislberg.
Others Present: Mary D. Motiff, Tourism Director; Ursula M. Garrison, Fair Coordinator (Departed: 5:00 pm).
I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 4:03 PM by Fickbohm.
II. Motion: (Strand/Snilsberg) to approve the minutes from the October 1, 2019, Tourism/Fair Committee Meetings.
Motion Carried.
III. Public Comment – No public Comment
IV. Budget Review – Motiff reviewed 2018 Tourism Budget with committee members
V. Discussion and Possible Action on Fair and Fairgrounds Rental Fees – Motiff went over proposed gate admission
fee reduction for seniors and a new reduced gate admission fee for veterans. Changes were also proposed to the
Commercial Vendor Fees and hours of operation and camping fees to reflect all the electrical upgrades. Motiff
proposed a breakdown of rental fees for those groups that don’t necessarily need to rent all the buildings.
Motion: (Strand/Snilsberg) to approve the new Fee Structures as submitted. Motion Carried.
VI. Discussion on Fair Planning – Motiff shared with the committee the option to add Broncos to the Bull Riding event
and possibly turning it into a two-day event. Other entertainment being discussed is a Lumberjack Show. The last
time we had the show at the Fair was in 2011.
VII. Building and Grounds Update – Phase II of the Electric Project is complete. Motiff is hoping to get a bid out in
December for Phase III. Six additional downspouts will be added to the 4H Horse Barn to eliminate overflow
problems. The saferoom drain field needs to be rebuilt due to Gophers chewing through pipelines.
VIII. Tourism Report from Director
A. Department Goals & Objectives with Activities – Motiff shared with Committee members the goals &
objectives of the department which adjusts the strategy to include more digital advertising.
B. Measurable Data Review – Motiff went over information requests for Visitor Guides, ATV/UTV Maps,
Snowmobile Maps, Scenic Byway Brochures, Hiking Trail Brochures and Camping Brochures – all of which are
up from 2018, with the exception of Visitor Guides which was slightly down.
IX. Future Agenda Items and Next Meeting Date – Next meeting date is yet to be determined.
X. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 5:25 PM.
