Minutes of the
BAYFIELD COUNTY TOURISM-FAIR COMMITTEE
Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 5:00 PM
Bayfield County Fairgrounds
Members Present: Larry Fickbohm, James Crandall, Jeremy Oswald, Jeanna Penney, Steve Sandstrom
Members Absent: none
Others Present: Fred Strand, County Board Supervisor; Mary D. Motiff, Tourism Director; Ursula M. Garrison,
Fair Coordinator
I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:02PM by Fickbohm
II. Election of Committee Chair and Vice-Chair – Motion by Crandall to nominate Fickbohm as Chair. No
other nominations were made. Motion (Crandall/Sandstrom) to close nominations and cast a unanimous
ballot for Fickbohm as Chair; motion carried. Motion by Oswald to nominate Sandstrom as Vice-Chair.
No other nominations were made. Motion (Crandall/Oswald) to close nominations and cast a unanimous
ballot for Sandstrom as Vice-Chair; motion carried.
III. Motion to Approve February 9, 2022, Minutes – (Oswald/Crandall) Motion carried.
IV. Public Comment: Fickbohm shared that Marla Lahti asked on behalf of Market Sale about utilizing a stall
in Draft Horse Barn for storage, putting in a wash station for sheep, and doing some painting inside the
barns.
V. Tourism Report from Director –
a. Motiff welcomed new committee members and reviewed the history of the department
b. Motiff mentioned that the Administrator is directing all departments to come up with some strategic
planning goals in the near future.
c. Motiff reviewed some specific activities that have been done to accomplish the department’s goals
and objectives
d. Motiff reviewed visitor inquiry statistics, sales tax figures, and Facebook account activity
VI. Budget Review: – Motiff reviewed the Budget report, pointing out that our sponsorship/donations are
doing well and that the recent countywide wage increase will have an effect on the budget.
VII. Discussion on 2022 Fair Planning – Motiff and Garrison gave updates on the status of activities in
preparation for the Fair. Volunteers are needed.
VIII. Staffing Updates – Motiff reviewed the current status of various positions and the plans to address
vacancies.
IX. Buildings and Grounds Updates – Motiff updated the committee on various projects that are planned for
the fairgrounds.
X. Next meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2022, at 5:00PM.
XI. Adjournment – the meeting was adjourned at 5:15PM.
