HomeMy WebLinkAboutTribal-County Relations Committee - Minutes - 8/23/2007Tribal Studies 082307 Page 1 of 1 Minutes of the Bayfield County Tribal Study Committee Meeting 10:00am, Thursday, August 23, 2007 Emergency Operations Center, Bayfield County Annex, Washburn, WI Attending: Phil Gordon, Leo LaFernier, Rose Soulier, Thomas Gordon, Mark Abeles-Allison, Dee Kittleson Others Present: Brenda Spurlock, Elizabeth Skulan, Joe Bresette, Charles Bresette, Kristine Kavajecz Meeting called to order by Dee Kittleson at 10:00am. Motion Regarding Minutes of the September 26, 2006 Tribal Studies Committee Meeting; Motion by Thomas Gordon, Phil Gordon to approve the minutes of the September 26, 2006 meeting. Motion Carried. Note that the date of minutes on the agenda was incorrect. Abeles-Allison provided a brief summary of topics that this committee has worked on in the past and gave an overview of the goal of the committee, which is to discuss items of mutual concern and work toward resolution of issues. Discussion regarding Criminal Justice Program-Brenda Spurlock: Spurlock provided a summary of programs currently being offered in and out of the jail and explained the goal of the department’s programs. Several positive comments were received from committee members regarding the programming. Tribal representatives were encouraged to attend committee meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:30am. Discussion and Possible Action Regarding County-Tribal Law Enforcement Agreement: Police Chief Charlie Bresette provided an overview of the grant. Discussion was held regarding various funding opportunities and how state and federal monies are allocated. The Law Enforcement Agreement Grant is due in October. A draft revised agreement will be presented at the next meeting. Both the Tribal Council and County board will need to pass resolutions supporting the application. An overview of how Superior Days is organized and the types of topics discussed were explained. Tribal representatives were invited to participate in 2008. Bresette reported that the 8 Tribal Police Chiefs in the state have formed a Drug/Gang taskforce to share gang intelligence between reservations. Discussion was held regarding social work related to transitioning inmates back into society. Motion by Thomas Gordon, LaFernier to adjourn. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 11:20am. Next meeting October 25, 10:00am at the Red Cliff Fire Hall. Topics to include: Law Enforcement Agreement, Drug Court, Rural Health Clinic location if grant awarded.
