Extension Committee - Minutes - 5/26/2015 1 BAYFIELD COUNTY AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION COMMITTEE May 26, 2015 County Board Room, 4:00 p.m. Courthouse, Washburn, WI M I N U T E S 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 4:03 pm by Chair Dee Kittleson. Committee members present: Dee Kittleson, Jim Crandall, John Bennett and Fred Strand. Absent was Marco Bichanich. Also present were: Tim Kane, Liz Lexau, Donna Ganson, Ian Meeker, Matt Cogger, Jason Fischbach and Mark Abeles-Allison. 2. Approval of Minutes of March 25, 2015 Meeting (action item) Motion made/seconded by Strand/Bennett to approve the March 25, 2015 meeting minutes. Motion carried. 3. Public Comment No public comment. 4. Out-of-State Overnight Travel Requests (action item) No out-of- state overnight travel requests. 5. 2015 UW-Extension Budget Update Report Tim reported that overall year-to-date’s 2015 UW Extension expenditures are on target. However, he did point out the following four items:  Temporary Employee year-to-date expenses of $2,720 are for ag research assistant Kurt Tibbals salary, and will be reimbursed with grant revenues.  Hort Educator operating supplies expenses of $546.50 should have been charged to the 2014 budget, and need County Auditor’s approval to do this.  Family Living operating supplies of ($294.41) includes a grant and workbook purchase revenue received.  4-H educational supplies expenses of $517.76 should have been charged to the 2014 budget, and need County Auditor’s approval to do this. 2 6. Educator/Agent Program Sharing Tim Kane – Community Development Educator  Mentioned 50 people attended an April 28 Business On Stage program featuring three Bayfield County winery businesses.  County Leadership Program had its graduation banquet on May 7.  Business Idea Contest application deadline is June 15.  2015 Northwest Wisconsin Lakes Conference is on June 26 in Hayward.  Clean Sweep collections scheduled for July 18 in Washburn & Iron River and August 27 in Herbster & Grand View.  2015 Lake Superior Business & Technology Conference set for August 14 at WITC. Liz Lexau – Family Living Educator  Provided Money Management Coach Training.  Planning to teach a Relationships Matter class series starting on June 24, and previously taught this to a Bayfield High School freshman class. Donna Ganson – 4-H Youth Development Assistant & NEP Educator 4H  Held Cultural Arts Festival on April 25 at the Drummond School.  Getting ready for the County Fair and will be meeting in Oulu.  Have Clothing & Foods Review coming up in Iron River on June 20.  Planning for 4-H Summer Camp that will be held at the Northwoods Camp in Drummond on July 9 – 12. NEP  Taught “My Plate” concept at the South Shore and Drummond Schools.  There will be some changes to the NEP Program and NEP Coordinator Kathy Beeksma is working on the NEP agreements.  Heidi Ungrodt was backfilling teaching NEP classes. Ian Meeker - 4-H Youth Development Educator  Collaborating with CESA 12, WITC and Northland College to hold a STEM Career Day.  Held a Meat Animal Quality Assurance Training series with FFA.  Showed “Mock Accident” video clip dealing with a texting-related car accident that was used in a Law Day Mock Trial held on April 27.  Used a Power of Wind Program in conjunction with flying kites.  Commented that the County Health Department’s Pete Morrissette wrote a grant to fund another video project. Matt Cogger – Horticulture Educator  Planning to have a Tractor Safety Training in first week of July.  Backyard Farming Series will start in June and be held on Mondays at the Cheqaumegon Food Cooperative.  A Grain Bin Tug-of-War Simulator will be used in the Tractor Safety Training and demonstrated at the Bayfield County Fair.  Fruit Field Day will be held on June 5 at Erickson’s Orchard. 3 Jason Fischbach – Agriculture Agent  High Tunnel Project at Bailey’s Greenhouse. Tomatoes were donated to the school High Tunnel gardens.  Have 8 agri-preneur apprentices for school High Tunnels.  Large Scale Livestock Committee education programming, including upcoming May 28 Understanding Nutrient and Sediment Loss from Agriculture Landscapes, and June 3 Surface Water Quality in the Chequamegon Bay Region: What We Know and What We Don’t presentations.  Mentioned Farm Succession Program work.  Commented on Hybrid Poplar Research Trials. 7. Announcements Upcoming 2015 WCA Annual Conference on September 20 – 22, 2015 at the La Crosse Center & Radisson Hotel in La Crosse. Bayfield County Administrator Mark Abeles-Allison presented Tim Kane with a framed “Certificate of Appreciation,” “In recognition and appreciation for 25 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Bayfield County through the University of Wisconsin Extension.” Ian Meeker mentioned that he is seeking another AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. 8.
