Extension Committee - Minutes - 1/25/2017UW-Extension Committee Meeting Minutes- 1-25-17 Page 1 of 2 BAYFIELD COUNTY AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION COMMITTEE January 25, 2017 Human Services Conference Room A, 9:00 am Bayfield County Courthouse, Washburn, WI Minutes 1. Call to Order: The Chair Fred Strand called the meeting to order at 9:10 am. Committee members present: Jeff Silbert, Larry Fickbohm & Fred Strand. Brian Goodwin arrived at 9:14 Others present: Matt Cogger, Donna Ganson, Liz Lexau, Tim Kane & Theresa LaChappelle. 2. Approval of Minutes of November 16, 2016 Meeting (action item) Motion (Silbert, Fickbohm) to approve the minutes of November 16, 2016 as presented. Motion approved and carried. 3. Public Comment There were no public comments. 4. Out-of-State Overnight Travel Requests (action item) There were no out-of-state travel requests. 5. 2016 UW-Extension Budget Report Update The 2016 UW-Extension budget update was included in the Committee members’ packets. There are still a few expenses and revenue that are not included in the update, such as mileage reimbursements for the Agriculture line item. 6. Update on Status of Coop Extension Reorganization Tim Kane shared the most recent email nEXT Generation update from Karl Martin, Dean and Director of UW Extension-Cooperative Extension. This email contains a timeline for when changes will occur. In February, Chancellor Cathy Sandeen will report on progress to date and will solicit feedback from Cooperative Extension colleagues and external partners. In March The IWG (Integration Work Group) will review feedback and incorporate it into deliberations about specific roles and responsibilities, specific organizational structures and detailed contractual relationships. In April Chancellor Sandeen will release future organizational structures to the public for comment. The committee members did not receive this email, nor have they been receiving the emails regarding the nEXT Generation updates. Tim will look into this to ensure that the committee members will start receiving these updates. Brian Goodwin will have copies mailed to him. The reorganization will be discussed during Superior Days. A discussion was held on the amount of sharing of programs and personnel that is already going on, mainly with Ashland County. Donna Ganson noted that WNEP (WI Nutrition Education Program) has changed its name to FoodWIse and that a Nutrition Educator Coordinator job has been advertised. The job is to oversee Ashland, Bayfield & Iron Counties FoodWIse programs. UW-Extension Committee Meeting Minutes- 1-25-17 Page 2 of 2 7. Issues and Program Ideas Discussion Liz Lexau was asked to educate the committee on what her recent Relationships Matter for Helping Professionals was about, how many attended and from where. Liz explained that the 16 Individuals who attended work or volunteer for agencies such as the Bayfield & Ashland County & Bad River Human Services, Red Cliff Home Visiting, New Day Shelter, NWSC, The Brick. These people see families on a one-on-one basis and this training gives these professionals tools to assist families with different methods to deal with conflict and relationships. Discussion. Liz also mentioned that she has held Relationship Matters classes for individuals including teens (at the Bayfield High School). The information about the availability of these classes does go to the area school guidance counselors. Liz also taught Relationship Matters in the jail and with people involved with the Criminal Justice system. Liz will send a list of attending agencies and the logic models for Relationship Matters for Helping Professionals to Brian Goodwin as he requested. Tim Kane spoke about his “Business on Stage”, program that was held last night. Approximately 40 people attended the presentation on “Expertise for Starting & Growing Your Business”. The next two upcoming presentations will include a presentation on arts related businesses and one on pizza/beer related businesses. Tim also co-led the joint Ashland & Bayfield Counties Leadership Program, which started last week. There are 17 people taking the course from a variety of backgrounds. The Clean Sweep Program information will be given to the Committee members when it becomes available. Jason Fischbach has a six session Farm and Food Business Entrepreneur Training Program going, which started on January 10th. Most of the 18 individuals taking this course paid for their registrations with an online payment. Matt Cogger noted that he is teaching a Master Gardener class. He has 12 people signed up. The classes are being held at Northland College. Donna Ganson pointed out that the updated 4H Family Handbook was included in the Committee members’ packets. Donna had hard copies of the latest 4-H Newsletter for Committee members who would like them. She also mentioned that most of the latest newsletters were sent electronically, but hard copies were sent to those who had requested them. Larry and Jeff requested that they receive their copies electronically. Brian would like receive a hard copy mailed to him. Fred already is on the mailing list. Jeff Silbert noted that there are not many clubs in the southern part of the county. He asked if Donna and Ian had future plans on reaching out to people in the southern part of the county. Donna noted that their plans are to focus more on the Bayfield area. Brian Goodwin mentioned that he will try to promote 4-H in his area. 8. Next Meeting Date and Time The next UW-Extension Committee meeting will be held on March 15, 2017 at 3 pm. The meeting room will be determined by availability, 9.
