Extension Committee - Minutes - 3/13/2019Bayfield County Extension Committee Meeting March 13, 2019 Page 1 of 3 BAYFIELD COUNTY Agriculture and Extension Education Committee Meeting Wednesday, March 13, 2019 – 4:00 p.m. Minutes 1. Call to Order Fred Strand, Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:04 p.m. Committee members present: Fred Strand, Jim Crandall, Larry Fickbohm, and Jeff Silbert Committee members absent: Tom Snilsberg Others present: Mary Pardee, Jason Fischbach, Donna Ganson, Liz Lexau, Kellie Pederson and Stephanie Bakker. 2. Approval of Minutes of January 9, 2019 meeting Motion (Fickbohm, Silbert) to approve the minutes of January 9, 2019. Motion approved. 3. Public Comment There were no public comments. 4. Out-of-State Overnight Travel Requests (action item) Liz Lexau discussed the conference she will be attending in Phoenix, AZ. There are no county budget funds needed. Motion (Crandall, Silbert) to approve the travel request made by Liz Lexau. 5. 2018 Extension Budget Update The 2018 Extension budget was included in the meeting packet. The Committee reviewed the final 2018 budget. Extension returned $13,461 back into the county budget. 6. 2019 UW-Extension Budget Update The 2019 Year-to-date budget was included in the meeting packet. The Committee reviewed the 2019 budget. 7. Staffing Updates: • New Foodwise Coordinator: Stephanie Bakker. Pardee introduced Stephanie Bakker. Bakker discussed the new educator position. It is being delayed with the Madison transition, but will be re-hired. Bakker talked about her experience with Extension and her qualifications/education. • UW Student Intern Pilot: The staff will be turning in a couple of applications for the pilot summer intern program between Extension and UW-Madison. Pardee reported that Mark Abeles-Allison has said that Bayfield County will contribute $2000 towards the cost of an intern in this program. • Potential Adventure program: The position description is posted on the Bayfield County website. • Ag Program Assistants – Fischbach and Pardee are working with the UW-Madison human resources department to have the two positions. Ariadna Chediack will be moving to University Staff as of April 1. There will also be a summer outreach education assistant (30-40 hrs./week). This position is still in progress. Bayfield County Extension Committee Meeting March 13, 2019 Page 2 of 3 • Bookkeeping/Clerk vacancy – There will be a 20 hour/week position announced soon at a Clerk I level. This will be 10 hours in Extension and 10 hours in Administration. 8. Area Extension Director Report • Opioids evaluation & plan update – Jen Park-Mroch from Extension reported on her findings of the Bayfield County response in January. Strand, Silbert, Lexau and Pederson attended this meeting. Mark Abeles-Allison is asking all the departments to discuss ways they can contribute to the opioid response. 9. Issues and Program Ideas Discussion • Fischbach Update: Two new Hazelnut fact sheets were handed out. One hundred people participated in the Hazelnut Conference. Fischbach will be the featured speaker at the next Ashland/Bayfield Master Gardeners Association workshop. His talk on Hydrangeas will be held on March 14, 2019 at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. This program is open to the public. Fischbach has also been serving on the Cervid committee. That committee’s recommendations for the County Board will be coming out by early summer. • Bakker Update: Attended FoodWIse Coordinators Conference. Bakker is working on the grant funding for her 3-county area (Bayfield/Ashland/Iron). • Ganson Update: April 6, 2019 is the Dairy Breakfast. Adult and youth volunteers will be assisting with the event. Cultural Arts Festival will be held on April 13,2019 at the Drummond School starting at 9:30 a.m. Committee members and the public are invited to attend. Ganson visited the Red Cliff Boys and Girls Club to discuss getting their youth involved in the Festival. Ganson has been working with new leaders and new enrollments. She has sent out welcome packets to 15 new families (so far). The 4-H Newsletter will come out this week. • Lexau Update: Discussed the Literacy Link program at the jail. The goals of the program are to reduce stressors on kids, help maintain relationships with parents, and promote literacy skills. There is a Jail Visiting Space that has been enhanced to be more child and reading-friendly. Inmates are making videos of themselves reading to their children; then the child gets a video of their parent reading and a copy of the book. There are only six of these pilot projects happening around the state. Lexau and her colleagues in Literacy Link reported to Ray Cross, President of the UW System, a few weeks ago in Madison. Lexau included additional information and pictures in the meeting packet. • Fischbach & Pederson Update: Fischbach & Pederson and are collaborating on a six-class series called Edible Ventures to help entrepreneurs. Several participants have signed up for the workshop series. They have also been working on farm to restaurant added value meetings. • Pederson Update: Pederson has been organizing a facilitated discussion on Creative Housing for Seniors on April 9. The public is invited to attend this discussion at the Washburn Public Library. Pederson is planning, in partnership with NW Regional Planning Commission, a Rural Transportation Summit on April 16 at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Pederson has been getting requests to help organizations with strategic planning. She will soon be starting a Bayfield County Extension Committee Meeting March 13, 2019 Page 3 of 3 session with the Bayfield Chamber. Pederson is also facilitating the CleanSweep project. Northwest Regional Planning has dropped the collections down to one collection, on one day, at one place and not on a weekend, for each county. • Pardee Update: Discussed Annual Performance Reviews, the wisc.edu email changeover, and the campus engagement workshop she attended on Opioids. • Committee Members Updates: Crandall talked about the Fair and Extension relationship and that Extension will have representatives at the state fair meetings to discuss relationships. Crandall and Silbert thanked Pardee for attending the Bayfield County Board Meetings and the Tribal Relations Committee meeting and for taking and interest in learning about the county. 10. Next Meeting Date and Time The next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. If available, the meeting should take place in Conference Room A. 11.
