Minutes
1.Call to Order 4:01
2.Approval of Minutes of May 13, 2021, meeting (action item)
(Strand, Sandstrom) approved.
3.Public Comment
No Comment
4.2021 UW-Extension Budget Update Report
47% used at the half-way point.
5.2021 Budget Amendment for Overcoming Obstacles funds (action item)
UW-Wisconsin was awarded the grant. Bayfield County is a contractor on this grant.
(Sandstrom, Crandall) Approved the budget amendment to go to the full County Board
6.2022 UW-Extension Bayfield County Budget (action item)
Explanation of the proposed Budget by Mary Pardee. First draft for Committee to look at. Some
increases
Slighlty more than a 1% increase
Fred, Sandstrom) to initially approve the 2022 budget to go forward.
7.Area Extension Director Report
A.Extension State and Area Updates
a.Covid policies –
Any number of people can meet inside and outside, unvaccinated must wear masks.
i.Youth under 12 inside must wear masks.
ii.Most restrictions have been lifted. Still using Zoom because
b.Ag/Hort Related Inquiries
i.Recently hired a State MG person
ii.Online system for gardening questions which will then be distributed
around the state with
Jason is still located in our County Office – July 1st Jason became an
Emerging Crops Specialist
Sarah will continue working through August 31st.
Transition is throughout the State, not just in Bayfield County.
iii.Jason will continue to answer questions as he is called. The State will be
getting their online system up working soon.
iv.How is this being accepted across the State ?– One County has come out
publicly against the change.

B.Staffing Updates
a.Ag Hazelnut Technician
Ryan Jansen, through October 31, 2021 grant funded.
b.FoodWIse Educator
i.Marissa Prelberg,will be starting August 1st. Ashland/Bayfield Counties
housed mainly in Ashland
c.Literacy Link Assistant
i.Not a local person,
d.Superior Adventures
i.Cole Schinstock has been hired. Is a County employee
e.Summer Ag Educator
i.Sarah will be around until the end of August.
8.Issues and Program Ideas Discussion
Stephanie Baker –
Marissa Perlberg, social work degree Bayfield County – Schools and early
School Garden Day – Bayfield School District 4-K, virtual farm to School Day, along with
Head Start and RC Early Childhood. Planted sunflower. Purchased some gardening supplies for
the Bayfield School Farm to School.
Youth events – will be
Strong Bodies will run again in the Fall virtually.
FoodWIse is supporting “Leah’s Pantry” Trauma Informed Nutrition programming which brings
awareness to the fact that trauma (ACE’s) can affect nutritional choices.
Farm to School gardens are tended through the summer depending on the school district.
Liz Lexau – Interim State Specialist Justice Involved Families
Receiving funding from a grant for Literacy Link. Looking at expanding services to counties that
do not have an HDR educator in their counties.
Caregiver Zoom
Hired Lit Link Assist – Monica Hetzler – Library Science Degree and underserved youth.
Red Cliff Library contact with them about setting up Making Memories program.
Anywhere Dad’s Podcast has not been launched yet. Looking at within the next month.
Working with prisons. Already programs working in the prisons. Main priority is to work with
local jails. A decision has not been made on support. May partner with the prison’s in different
ways/

Planning Ahead – pilot program – target for elderly population on end of life
Encouraging Financial Educations – looking at doing
In Person-Financial Education in Red Cliff.
Fall – in Person, paired down Rent Smart program
Gets information from the State and sends it out to her list.
Ian –
Last weekend -55 campers- 17 counselors at Camp Cross Woods.
Camp went very well. Sleeping was reduced in the campers. Temperatures taken everyday.
16 had been previous campers. Excellent job by the Counselors!
Superior Adventures –
Tall Ship Sailing tonight.
Working with South Shore school kayaking group. Quiet boy that overcame his fear.
Girls wanted to ride the single trak – Totally enjoyed. “I was born to do this.”
Could possibly add more hours for Cole, depending on budget and potentially
Working with Red Cliff Boys and Girls Club the first week of August.

Kelllie Pederson –
Red Cliff Economic Development Corporation – Working through the by-laws, etc. Looking at
hiring a Coordinator. Setting up the interviews, etc.
Senior Care Cooperative – Cable community members, Sue Rose & others, North Country
Independent Living, Mary Dougherty, CORE, working on this. Caregivers & consumers. This
started when Kellie has held Senior Housing conversations around the county.
Housing Survey – The survey has been completed. Waiting on NWRP to complete the
informational study. WHEDA grant in January will bring in the more information. Some
communities are starting to discuss.
Jason –
Drought and frost have affected the farmers.
Strawberries are poor this year. Raspberries are looking good. Apples are dependent on where
the farm is.
Field Day yesterday. Not many
