HomeMy WebLinkAboutTraffic Safety Commission - Minutes - 8/22/2013MINUTES OF THE BAYFIELD COUNTY TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMITTEE THURSDAY – August 22, 2013 The regular meeting of the Bayfield County Traffic Safety Committee was called to order by Chairman Thomas R. Toepfer, at 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Bayfield County Highway office in Washburn, WI. Present were committee members: Morris Luke – WISDOT; Dennis Johnson– WISDOT / BOTS; Paul Susienka - Bayfield County Sheriff Office; Don Swedberg – Population Center Rep; Brett Heino – WI State Patrol NW; Sheree Collins – Education; Jan Victorson – Emergency Management; Andrea Loeffelholz – UW TIC; Thomas Toepfer – Bayfield County Highway Commissioner; Joe Groshek – North Coast Cycling Association and Robert Follis - Citizen. Motion by Susienka / Victorson and carried to approve the minutes of the May 16, 2013 meeting of the Bayfield County Traffic Safety Committee. Joe Groshek addressed the committee and expressed appreciation for the county efforts directed towards accommodating bicycle traffic in Bayfield County. Mr. Groshek also explained the NCCA’s efforts toward educating area bicyclists to provide a safe and cooperative biking / motorist environment. Chairman Toepfer commended Mr. Groshek on his efforts. Groshek reported on his bicycling organization’s appreciation of the 18 miles of paved shoulders on CTH-C and reported on efforts to organize a ceremony to recognize those responsible for the project and to initiate a “Bike and Drive the Horn” event in late September. Andrea Loeffelholz, Outreach Specialist with the U.W. Transportation Information Center, presented information on “Community Maps” as an interactive resource for reviewing fatal and injury crashes at quarterly Traffic Safety Meetings. Bayfield County Traffic Safety Coordinator, Sheriff Susienka presented a Spot Map of Traffic Crashes in the county. No trends were noted and no fatalities were reported. Dennis Johnson, WISDOT / BOTS reported that there have been 319 fatalities in Wisconsin to date compared to 383 in 2012 and a 5 year average of 345. Johnson reported on Laws of the Month, an upcoming Labor Day DUI crackdown and a start to School Awareness reminder. Chairman Toepfer reported on current county highway projects.
